Gleastonis a village with a population of around 400 in theFurnessarea of SouthCumbria, situated between the towns ofBarrow-in-Furness,Dalton-in-FurnessandUlverston.HistoricallyinLancashire, the history of the village can be traced as far back as theMesolithicperiod and it was the centre of themanorofMuchlandin theMiddle Ages. Today it is largely a commuter village for the nearby towns, but its past is still visible in the remains ofGleaston Castleand GleastonWater Mill, which is open as a tourist attraction.
Since theIron AgeGleaston would probably have been inhabited by theCarvetiitribe who were based atCarlisleand covered most of modern Cumbria, or possibly theSetantiitribe from Lancashire.
